Classes and assignments

Teachers can create a class, invite students by email or a join code, and assign work that students complete inside Lecture Hat.

Creating a class

Create the class from your notebook list. You get a teacher notebook for the course material and a dashboard for roster, assignments, and settings.

Anything you upload to the class notebook is available to every enrolled student. Their own notebooks stay private to them.

Inviting students

Share the join code, or restrict joining to your institution's email domain so only verified addresses on that domain can enroll. Students keep their own account either way.

Class privacy settings control what the class collects. You can turn off transcript storage, chat history, practice generation, or integrity analysis for the whole class, and a strict privacy preset turns off everything except chat.

Designing an assignment

An assignment carries its instructions, its due date, and how much AI help students may use:

  • Full help: the tutor answers normally.
  • Hints only: the tutor guides without giving the answer.
  • None: chat is unavailable inside the assignment.

The help level is enforced on the server, so it holds no matter what the student's browser sends.

Reviewing submissions

Each student has one submission with a version history, so you can see how the work developed rather than only the final state. Open a submission to read it alongside the assignment.

Integrity flags

Submissions are checked for signals worth a second look: text copied from the chat transcript, overlap with another student's submission, an implausibly fast completion, code that does not match the student's earlier style, and heavy reliance on the tutor.

A flag is a prompt to look, not a verdict. Read the submission and its versions before drawing a conclusion.
