Chapter 4 · Circular Motion · pg 47

4.7 Vertical Circular Motion

A ball of mass mmm is attached to a string of length rrr and swung in a vertical circle. Find the tension at the bottom if the ball moves at minimum speed to complete the loop.

Solution.

At the top of the loop the string is slack when speed is minimal, so gravity alone supplies the centripetal force:

mg = \frac{m v_{\text{top}}^2}{r} \;\Rightarrow\; v_{\text{top}} = \sqrt{gr}

By conservation of energy between the top and bottom of the loop,

\tfrac{1}{2} m v_{\text{bot}}^2 = \tfrac{1}{2} m v_{\text{top}}^2 + 2 m g r

Substituting v_{\text{top}}^2 = g r yields v_{\text{bot}}^2 = 5 g r. At the bottom of the loop the tension and gravity together supply the centripetal force:

T = m g + \frac{m v_{\text{bot}}^2}{r} = m g + 5 m g = \boxed{6\, m g}

Question:

Describe the role of mRNA in protein synthesis.

Student A

“mRNA carries amino acids to the ribosome where they are assembled into proteins.”

↳ Confused with tRNA — mRNA carries the genetic code, not amino acids

Student B

“mRNA is produced at the ribosome and carries instructions from DNA for translation.”

↳ Reversed — mRNA is transcribed in the nucleus, not produced at the ribosome

Example proof submission

Show that every compact subset KKK of a Hausdorff space XXX is closed.

1Proof. Let x \in X \setminus K.
2For each k \in K, ∃\exists∃ disjoint open
3U_k \ni x, V_k \ni k (Hausdorff).
4Let U = \bigcap_{k \in K} U_k. Then UUU is open,
5x \in U, U \cap K = \emptyset.
6So X \setminus K is open, hence KKK closed. □\square□
Infinite intersection of open sets is not necessarily openStudents must use compactness to extract a finite subcover first.

Student Insights Dashboard

Lecture Hat Education turns student submissions into a clear map of class-wide confusion, so you can see which concepts are breaking down and who needs help first. It surfaces patterns that would take much longer to spot by reviewing submissions one at a time, giving you a starting point for re-teaching, intervening, and assigning targeted practice before the next assessment.
