The state of AI in school

88% of students use AI for assessments— up from 53% in 2024.

Source: HEPI, 2025

The academic integrity crisis has evolved into an AI witch hunt, where students are afraid of using em dashes — because ChatGPT uses them. Meanwhile, professors are overwhelmed with blatant cheating and are bypassing the problem by shifting grades to in-person assessments.

We think there's a better way.

The trust contract

Sanctioned AI. Not spoon-fed answers.

Teachers, professors, and tutoring teams can bring assignments into Lecture Hat, where students can work and ask questions to their AI Notebooks. Students know the AI use is allowed for that class, and teachers can see that answers stay in-context and supportive rather than spoon-feeding.

AI Help Levels per assignment

Choose Full help, Hints only, or No AI per assignment. Setting is enforced server-side, not just in the UI.

Time-stamped interaction logs

Every AI message a student sends is logged with a timestamp. You see how the student corrects themselves and problem-solves over time.

Submission-version history

A full timeline of changes per submission. Copy-paste workflows are much easier to spot, because we keep every revision and surface the diff between snapshots.

The teacher dashboard

See where students struggle.

Whether you're teaching high school students, leading a college seminar, running a tutoring cohort, or managing a lecture hall through an institutional seat, get real-time visibility into student confusion points. Lecture Hat turns student submissions into a clear map of class-wide confusion — and thanks to Synaptic Storage, the system can point students back to specific examples you covered earlier.

Create and share custom practice questions
Track class-wide comprehension trends

Privacy & trust

Designed for teacher control.

We don't train AI models on your students' content. We don't sell student data. Class-level settings give teachers, professors, and tutoring teams per-class control over what's stored, what's surfaced, and what the AI is allowed to do.

Strict Privacy mode (class-level)

Toggle FERPA-aligned strict-privacy at the class level. Content stays out of analytics; usage metrics needed for billing/rate-limit ops are retained.

AI Help Levels (per assignment)

Set Full / Hints-only / No AI per assignment. Enforced at the trust boundary, not just the UI.

Integrity flags

Five detector types: plagiarism vs prompt/chat, cross-student copy, rapid completion, code style drift, and AI dependency.

FERPA-aligned data handling

Lecture Hat does not train on student content. Provider-specific terms are listed at /subprocessors. Strict Privacy preset wipes content-bearing stores.

See the full subprocessor list and our privacy policy.
